For World Snake Day, we're giving you a closer look at what makes saving a species possible.

Last month, Memphis Zoo researchers joined partners from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Forest Service in Louisiana for another milestone in the recovery of the critically endangered Louisiana Pinesnake, the rarest snake species in North America.

The team conducted a historic release at a second recovery site and launched a new radio telemetry project to monitor the snakes after their release into the wild. These efforts build on more than 20 years of conservation work led by Memphis Zoo and Director of Conservation and Research Dr. Steve Reichling to help restore this species to its native longleaf pine forests.

What wildlife is living alongside us in Memphis?

The Memphis Zoo is proud to join forces with local community partners to launch a new Urban Wildlife Research Initiative that will help us better understand how wildlife and people coexist across our city.

Using motion-activated cameras placed throughout Memphis, this collaborative project will provide valuable insights into the animals that call our community home while supporting conservation efforts here in Memphis and beyond.

Thank you to everyone who came out to see Ru and celebrate her half birthday today! 🥳

Beyond 6 months, this celebration marks even more exciting milestones she’s reached! Our primate staff has noted that Ru is starting to climb when mom will let her down and she’s starting to take an interest in her environment by reaching out to grab things, eyeing enrichment, and even starting to gum food.

We hope as Ru continues to grow and learn, you’ll grow with her! Young orangutans will stick by mom for around 8-10 years before becoming independent. We’re so excited to share many more memories and milestones between our guests and Ruhana! 🧡

Can you believe it? Baby orangutan Ruhana is turning six months old! 🧡

To celebrate this exciting milestone, we'll be hosting a special half-birthday party for Ru on Tuesday, June 16, at 9:00 a.m. in the orangutan habitat. Our Keepers have planned some fun birthday-themed enrichment, including a special cake for Ru and mom, Jahe!

Please note that Jahe will have access to both her indoor and outdoor habitats and will ultimately decide whether she and Ru participate in the festivities. As always, our orangutans call the shots, so while we're hopeful they'll be out enjoying their treats, we can't guarantee visibility.

We hope to see you there as we celebrate six wonderful months with Ru!
