The Captive dreamer above all is a book about the conflicted heart of a young man. Christian was born into an aristocratic cavalry family during the Age of the interwar Third republic. His father a renowned Cavalry commander who served with French forces in the Polish-soviet war of 1920 had animated his son with a strong Anti-Communist conviction that in the 1930s had turned into a Sympathy for fascism and National Socialism. When the defeat of 1940 came around Christian became a journalist in the collaborationist press, writing articles for a Fascist newspaper until the allies landed in Normandy. When the allies where coming to Paris to "Liberate" it from fascism, Christian is offered to Turn sides by Resistance contacts at the literal ninth hour, But Christian, holding to his beliefs and refusing to betray them, hops in his Car and drives to Alsace where he enlists in the SS Charlemange division. After months of training where he becomes an Anti-Tank officer he is sent into the Hell of Pomeriania. Where his unit fights bravely outnumbered and outgunned by Soviet forces taking heavy casualties while inflicting the same on the advancing reds. At a town called Hammerstien they are cut off from the rest of the Reich and forced into the existence of Guerilla fighters in order to reach the safety of the Oder river. Over the course of several weeks Christian and his unit of 300 "Guerillas" which grows ever smaller after constant combat with Soviet patrols to only 5 men, live a rat like existence slinking through the forests of Pomeriania until hes captured by Polish forces from Anders army in a stroke of luck, for this saves his life. the Rest of the book deals with Christians life in Soviet and then french prisons. Its an extremely interesting look at the mindset of the Young European in the Gotterdammrung of 44-45 who remains ever loyal to his ideals of a European Rebirth under National Socialism.
