Hunted Across Generations: Rusengo Muyengeza Family

As I shared my father's side family history, this is my mother's side century of persecution.

(Rusengo is a cousin of mine on both sides: my mother's and my father's.) and he is a survivor of Gatumba genocide against Banyamulenge and the President of Gatumba Foundation

Bunyeri survived Mahina (1905-1924), survived Mulele(1964-1969) to be burned alive 1998
Nyarukundo survived Vyura (1996-1998), Uvira 2004 to be killed with her kids 2004 in Gatumba refugee camp

The Weight We Carry

Désiré Rusengo, son of Muyengeza, our family's history is marked by repeated attempts to survive violence and persecution of a genocidal character in Congo.

1905–1914 Muyengeza Ndabarishe, my great-great-great-great-grandfather, was forced to flee Mahina during the colonial period, when Banyamulenge were being attacked and killed. He fled with Nyagahakwa, son of Nkanika, and they eventually found refuge around Lake Tanganyika. This marked the beginning of a persecution that repeated across generations.

1966 Death of Birorero My great-great-grandfather, Birorero, son of Muyengeza, was burned alive by Mai-Mai/Mulelist fighters. He was an elderly man who could no longer flee when armed groups were hunting Banyamulenge civilians.

1998 Katanga That year, we lost many family members in a campaign by the Congolese state that described Banyamulenge as a "cancer" to be eradicated:

My father, Muyengeza Bahigwa, was killed by soldiers of the Congolese state.
My uncle, Munyaruhanga Bahigwa Ruregeya, was killed in Lubumbashi, where he had gone to pursue university studies.
My maternal great-grandmother, Bunyeri Kabika, too old to flee, was burned alive in Vyura, Katanga.
My maternal uncle, Senanda Serushahi, was killed by soldiers of the Congolese government .

The survivors members of our family fled from Kalemie to Uvira, where we lived in insecurity for six years before being forced to flee again then comes Gatumba, Burundi.

2004 Gatumba During the genocide against Banyamulenge refugees in Gatumba, I lost:

My mother, Nyarukundo Florence
My younger brother, Musore Muyengeza, age 6
My younger brother, Claude Rusengo, age 5
They were killed while seeking refuge, Gatumba became another devastating chapter in our family's history of persecution.

Exile and the Invisible Wounds of War My uncle, Nkundabatware Rukinisha Bahigwa, was forced into exile in Rwanda, living as a refugee in Kibuye for over ten years before being resettled in Canada. But the exile did not erase the wounds of war, he struggled with chronic health problems and trauma from his past, and was later killed by criminals in Canada while still living with these long-term effects.

HAPPENING: The Banyamulenge community in #Rwanda gather at Camp Kigali to commemorate more than 160 victims of the 2004 Gatumba massacre, which took place on the night of August 13, 2004, at a UNHCR transit camp in Gatumba, Burundi.

• The 22nd commemoration is being held under the theme, “Remember, Seek Justice, and Condemn Genocide Ideology in the DRC.”

• Banyamulenge refugees, including women and children, were killed and dozens were wounded when armed attackers stormed the camp and set shelters on fire.

• The PALIPEHUTU-FNL, a Burundian rebel group, claimed responsibility for the attack. Reports at the time also alleged the involvement of elements linked to the FDLR, the Congolese army, and Mai-Mai militias, though the extent of their involvement has remained contested.

Then, we engaged with Community Hygiene Clubs, where @WaterAid is improving WASH infrastructure—key to preventing zoonotic diseases.

Next, we visited pig markets & farms to better understand the project context & impact. Farmers are eager to turn pig farming into more lucrative businesses but highlighted key challenges: access to WASH, improved breeds & better control of pig diseases like T. solium cysticercosis.

Finally, we spent time with participating households, hearing their experiences & witnessing the @onehealthughe's research team in action.
