It has always been the dream of Mr. Oriel Chinthaka Ariyaratna Paiyagala Linyanage, a locally recruited driver at Ghana’s embassy in France to one day visit Ghana for the first time after serving Ghana’s embassy in Paris as representational driver for 41 long years.

His dream became a reality when we surprised him with an all expenses paid trip to Ghana and awarded him for his dedicated service to Ghana for more than four decades during our carols service.

Oriel’s sponsored trip to Ghana is part of his award which comes with visits to tourist attractions, gifts and a cash prize.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Oriel was recruited on 8th September, 1984. His late father was also a driver for many years at our embassy in France and never had the opportunity to visit Ghana.

I wish to also celebrate the following incredibly dedicated Ghanaian locally recruited staff who also received similar awards:

Mr. Evans Aryeequaye Attoh — serving as driver in our Rome embassy for 36 years;

Mrs. Caroline Nkrumah-Appiah — serving in our New York mission as a stenographer for 35 years; and

Mr. Philip Twum Nkansah — serving in our Rome embassy as an Accounts Assistant for 35 years.

The Ministry has established this new long-service and best performing staff award scheme for locally recruited colleagues of our diplomatic missions abroad to motivate, deepen inclusivity and promote productivity. It shall be held annually.

It is worth noting that home-based staff of the Foreign Service do have a distinct existing award scheme.

My attention has been drawn to a heart-wrenching video reporting the killing of a Ghanaian student by name Nana Adjei in Latvia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has commenced immediate investigations through relevant diplomatic channels.

We shall provide the public with regular updates.

It is worth reminding that nobody harms a Ghanaian in any part of the world and gets away with it.
