and the throughline of the melody (in the playfield usage and the little movement ideas like that one pattern where the slider loops into itself and then the following slider goes that same direction), and also the overall vibe (which is pretty epic and moving and nostalgic). 5/6
he accomplishes a kind of rare feat: you get a vivid picture of his interpretation of the music: the moments of suspense (the stationary 1/2 circles) and release (the subsequent short and fast slider, underlapped), and the texture of the guitars (that dilapidated 'q' slider), 4/6
where each back-to-back flow idea, sv choice, and composition is beautifully, chillingly, sock-knockingly virtuosic - somehow, none of his choices are obvious and none of his ideas are repeated (typically a bad thing), and yet it's all evocative. 3/6
sometimes it lashes out in aggression like in 'rewriter'. sometimes it's suave and stylish like in 'one thing left to try'. at its best, i think it looks something like the last part in our 'drawing again' collab, where his choices reach a peak of improvisational deft, 2/6
i could praise his fucked-up concepts, wild object compositions, or underrated slider designs, but none of that would really get to the heart of why his maps are so good. what it really comes down to the vibes. it's that layer of dormant angst mixed with moments of elegance. 1/6
