None of the major adaptations have ever truly captured what makes comic Mary Jane so iconic. The movies and games constantly strip away that balance, the Raimi films turned her into a perpetual damsel, the MCU reimagined her as a completely different character in Michelle Jones, and the Insomniac games shifted her into a hardened reporter role that often feels detached from her signature charm.

​They keep missing the mark because adaptations struggle to let her just be Peter's equal without forcing her into conventional hero-adjacent tropes. Comic MJ works so well because she actively chooses to stay by Peter's side with full knowledge of the danger, offering an unmatched warmth and resilience that Grounds him. Until a studio actually trusts her source-material personality and emotional depth, non-comic fans will keep wondering why she’s supposed to be the greatest love of Peter Parker's life.
