This political philosophy book (The Prince) is widely cited as the handbook of autocrats. It’s perhaps as widely misunderstood as it is cited - out of context. Nevertheless, if we considered his advice to leaders generally, it doesn’t stand. His idea that FEAR is easier to control than LOVE, and subsequent advice that therefore the leader should aim to be feared, is ill thought.

The problem with ruling by Fear is that the leader lives in fear too. When you terrorise people, you also live in fear of what they’re likely to do to you should they get a chance. You end up being paranoid, always fearing that they’re planning revenge. This then heightens preemptive violence, increasing your victims and anger. With this, you can’t move or socialise freely. You also end up in an open prison constructed by your terror. You can never live a normal life when you know that many people are angry with your actions, except if your sense of judgement is deranged and you can no longer sense danger.

Duncan, while this might be understood from the angle of fear and avoidance of danger to self, I don’t think it takes away moral responsibility. In ethics, we usually don’t make moral attribution where an actor lacks freedom or knowledge. But, from a consequentialist perspective, if we say there is no freedom in the magistrate’s act and therefore no moral responsibility, the wider moral implications are absurd. A person who steals out of fear of poverty is also morally cleared. Another who eliminates a colleague who is likely to take their job is also not culpable. The list goes on. Sometimes giving a semblance of lack of freedom is simply a pronouncement that ‘between my benefit and harming an innocent person, I choose my benefit’. It is a false dilemma projected in defence of weak consciences. Presenting facilitators of violence as helpless victims simply serves to motivate more into such performance.

Well articulated. Moral agency doesn’t vanish under pressure, it’s tested by it. Pretending officials are mere cogs excuses a system that rewards complicity while punishing courage. True justice requires individuals who choose principle over self-preservation, even when costly. Excusing the choice only guarantees more of the same.

When I was contacted to help fundraise for Norah Atuhire, my immediate feeling was that I am not doing any other fundraising any time soon. I’m overwhelmed by appeals, and I can only do so much. But today, when I met the lady spearheading the attempt to save Norah’s life, I was deeply touched and had to come here to appeal to your kindness.

Norah, a primary teacher and single mother of two, is suffering from a strange disease called Lupus Erythematosus. The disease turns the body against itself, and it fights its own immunity (in lay terms). That is how it deformed Norah from her original self to look like this and suffer excruciating pain. While the disease cannot be cured, she can be treated to get back to normal life with much less pain. The medication to take her back to ‘normal’ is expensive, but we can help her in which ever way we can, They’re looking for about $4,000. See numbers on flyer.
