The Only Strategy a Refugee Has is Run
To the global community that stands in unwavering solidarity with the displaced, to the advocates who amplify the voices of the unheard, and to the host nations that offer more than just a borderβthey offer a beginning: we express our deepest gratitude. My name is Mercy Masika, and in my journey as a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, I have witnessed a truth that is as harrowing as it is hopeful. For over 110 million people worldwide, the fundamental strategy for existence has been stripped down to a single, urgent imperative: to run.
This βrunβ is not merely a physical escape; it is a multi-dimensional act of faith, a marathon of the human spirit that demands our collective support and a radical shift in how we perceive the displaced.
The Anatomy of the Run
The journey of a refugee is a layered experience, where each step is driven by a different, profound motivation. To truly assist, we must understand what they are running for:
1.Running for Dear Life: This is the initial, visceral flight from immediate danger. It is the run from conflict, persecution, and the collapse of safety. We thank the first responders and donors whose support provides the essential βsafety netsβ of water, food, and protection that make survival possible.
2.Running for Family: A refugee rarely runs for themselves alone. They run to safeguard the future of their children and to honor the legacy of their ancestors. This is a run of love and responsibility. We are grateful to those who support family reunification and educational programs, ensuring that the bonds of kinship are not severed by the miles of displacement.
3.Running for Country: Displacement does not erase oneβs identity. Refugees run as the living vessels of their nationsβ cultures, stories, and hopes. They are the βcountry in exile.β We call upon governments to provide the space and graceβthe inclusive policies and the legal βroomββthat allow refugees to navigate their run while preserving their dignity and heritage.
4.Running for the Future: This is the transformative stage where a refugee seeks to regain agency. They run toward a life of contribution. We must exhort the private sector and local communities to assist them to run their businesses and run with their talents and skills. Whether they are artisans, entrepreneurs, or professionals, their impact is vital to the economies that host them.
A Call to Action and Solidarity .
Policy & Governance: space and grace through inclusive laws
Economic inclusion: support refugees with their enterprenueral skills and assistance .
Professional recognition : Helping refugees run with talents ,
Community : create space and hosted with intentionality.
To my brothers and sisters who are currently in the midst of this long run: do not let the world define you by your displacement. Your talents are not baggage; they are your bridge to the future. Be impactful. Make every mile of this journey worth the while by showing the world the immense value you bring.
The only strategy a refugee has is to run. Let us ensure that they are never running alone, and that their path leads to a destination where they are not just sheltered, but truly welcomed, valued, and home.
In solidarity and with profound gratitude,
Mercy Masika
