Western chronology, shaped by the Christian tradition, cleaves history at a single human birth. Time is divided into Before Christ and Anno Domini; the sacred is isolated from the secular, and the human story is made to begin with a created being. The result is a civilizational self-limitation: history is rooted in an event rather than in the Source, and everything that precedes that event is rendered, in a profound sense, prefatory or incomplete.

Islam recognizes no such rupture. There is no BC/AD fracture, no official partition of time into religious and non-religious ages. History is carried beyond the merely human — both backward and forward. It does not commence with the body of Adam, still less with the birth of any later prophet. It begins in the realm of souls, in the primordial covenant: Alastu bi-Rabbikum? — “Am I not your Lord?” — and the answer Qālū balā — “They said: Yes.” The Creator, not a created figure, stands at the origin.

This is why the Islamic vision addresses every age without remainder. Other frameworks, by anchoring time in a historical individual, risk rendering themselves historically rootless and conceptually confined. Islam begins with the Lord of all worlds before any world was formed, and it continues without interruption. The calendar of nations may still use conventional dates; the metaphysical calendar of Islam does not.
The difference is not merely calendrical. It is the difference between a history that starts with man and a history that starts with God.
