@AWinderNewton I love this initiative and my family and friends have benefited greatly from it. I’m curious what the financial implications are turning out to be. What does it cost? Is it leading to more adults buying rec passes? Is it bringing in additional revenue in other ways?
#BREAKING: A federal court has blocked the Trump admin from dismantling the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP).
The court called their actions unlawful, arbitrary, and capricious.
A huge win for refugees, resettlement agencies, and the rule of law. Another #AfghanEvac 🧵
I feel sad for our country. I have never felt it so divided.
There is a meanness that permeated the chamber tonight.
The punch, counterpunch will never work. If we continue with this “eye for an eye”mentality, we will all end up blind.
Our country needs some healing.
I just called on my elected officials to defend and support refugee resettlement. Will you join me? Contact your elected officials TODAY and ask them to #DefendRefuge!

🚨🚨🚨Lawsuit filed on Trump's refugee ban
Plaintiff "was scheduled to travel on Jan. 22 with his wife and baby and had sold all of the family’s possessions and given up their rental house in preparation; he then learned that their travel was canceled."

A few gentle reminders:
👉🏽 Refugees are in the U.S. legally, and many are brothers & sisters in Christ.
👉🏽 The U.S. receives less than 1% of the worlds refugees. (And the numbers are quite low - at the height, just over 100,00, not millions)
👉🏽 Foreign aid (including military assistance) is 1% of our U.S. federal budget, but the benefits far outweigh the costs. It’s living saving aid & relief, but also helps to counter adversaries like the Chinese communist party.
👉🏽 I want a safe & secure border, and orderly immigration policies, and used to work for a border state freedom caucus Member of Congress.
👉🏽 I also want humane policies that are able to provide safe & legal pathways.
👉🏽 We should be able to have thoughtful discussions about policy reforms (and there’s actually a lot that I’d love to see enacted! It’s been decades since there’s been comprehensive immigration reform)
Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are coming to Capitol Hill today to talk about the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
I would have liked to attend the meeting and explore whether there are any opportunities to work across party lines to promote cost savings and efficiencies.
I’m told the meeting is closed to Democrats, which is unfortunate. Many of us on this side of the aisle share both the goal of making government more efficient, and actually have experience doing it.
Americans want Democrats and Republicans to work together to make government serve the people better.
38 years ago: Gas = 93¢. Eggs = 87¢. A lot has changed since then—but not our immigration system. The last meaningful reform was in 1986. Meanwhile, our economy faces worker shortages and 0.1% population growth. We need Congress to act on solutions that work for today's America.
Exactly 100 years ago this year, Calvin Coolidge signed the National Origins Act based on this exact xenophobic mindset. We’re at risk of repeating the same mistake today. It would be a moral outrage, and also economically damaging to us. That’s why I wrote this op-ed on May 26, the 100th anniversary of the 1924 law:

#election2024
Fmr. GOP Sen. Jeff Flake:
“I’m voting for Kamala Harris not in spite of being a Republican or a conservative, but because I’m a conservative. Conservatives first and foremost believe in the rule of law. And to have a former president who lost a free and fair election then attempted to overturn that election-How can any conservative support such a person?”
This is so extremely misunderstood by the average American. One of the main causes of undocumented immigration is the mismatch between the US economy’s need for workers & the types of visas our legal system does NOT provide.

📈NEW POLL: @RefugeesIntl@RefugeeAdvcyLab & @DataProgress find a majority of US likely voters support the US refugee resettlement program & access to asylum at the southern border.
This support grows when people personally know someone who is a refugee⬇️

@derekforutah Hey @derekforutah, it would be super helpful if you could answer the candidate questions on @vote411 so busy voters can easily compare you to your opponents. Thanks!
