If you have a tree taken down, don't pay to haul the logs away. Stack them in a back corner instead and you'll build one of the richest habitats a yard can hold.

A pile of logs left to rot becomes a whole food chain. Fungi and beetles move into the softening wood. Salamanders and toads tuck into the cool, damp spaces underneath. Snakes hunt the slugs, woodpeckers dig out the grubs, wrens and chipmunks shelter in the gaps.

Here's the part that surprises people: a lot of native bees nest in dead wood. Mason and leafcutter bees move into old beetle tunnels in the logs and raise their young inside them. The deadwood is a maternity ward for threatened bees.

Build it loose, with plenty of gaps and a mix of log sizes. Leave at least one log touching bare soil so fungi can take hold and the whole thing starts to break down.

That “pollinator seed mix” might be planting a problem.

A University of Washington study grew out 19 wildflower seed packets and found something wild: Every single packet contained invasive species. Not one or two bad mixes. All 19.

Some had 3 invasive species. Some had 13. Eight contained plants considered noxious weeds in at least one state. A third of the packets didn’t list contents at all. And only 5 accurately listed what was inside.

The most common species? Bachelor’s button. Pretty? Sure. But absolutely harmful. It can spread into native grasslands and crowd out the plants local insects actually evolved to use.

That’s the trap.

People buy “wildflower” mixes because they want to help bees and butterflies. But vague seed packets can introduce aggressive nonnative plants that make the problem worse.

Better move: Buy region-specific native seed mixes. Use local native plant nurseries. Check with your state native plant society. Look for packets that list every species by name.

Gaza is taking its last breaths, and the situation we have reached is extremely dangerous.

Temperatures are rising to suffocating levels, and the tents where hundreds of thousands live have turned into ovens made of fabric and plastic. There is no electricity, no air conditioning, no fans, no cold water. People try to sleep, but heat, hunger, and fear make sleep seem like an impossible dream.

Clean water is scarce, cleaning supplies are almost nonexistent, and essential medicines are unavailable. Skin diseases are spreading in a terrifying way among children and adults, while garbage piles up and sewage mixes with displacement areas, spreading even more suffering.

Long lines form for food, yet many return empty handed. Aid is decreasing, and most relief centers have stopped or are no longer able to meet even the minimum needs.

At night, rats, insects, snakes, and scorpions crawl into the tents, while during the day people face unbearable heat and endless hunger. There is no safety, no privacy, and nowhere to go. Meanwhile, killings and destruction continue daily, while Gaza’s space shrinks day by day, forcing people into smaller and more overcrowded areas.

This is not life. This is not displacement. This is a complete collapse of everything that allows human beings to live with dignity.

What more is the world waiting for? How many children must go hungry? How many patients must die before the world acts? Do not stay silent. Speak about Gaza. Share what is happening.
