With the strong #BlackLivesMatter and #IndigenousLivesMatter movements, I thought I'd help by addressing some of the popularized misconceptions around Indigenous people and prairie farming. We know that serious systemic racism exists, and it exists strongly in ag communities.
From wild wet conditions and flooding to wicked hail storms, 2026 is shaping up for heartbreak in so many farming areas.
You can make all the right decisions and still come up with the short straw. And know this: you are not your yields.

Last month, The Do More Agriculture Foundation's board and staff came together in Saskatoon for an in-person board meeting and retreat โa valuable opportunity to reconnect, reflect, and look ahead together.
As a farmer-founded organization, taking time to align on our vision and priorities helps ensure we're continuing to meet the evolving needs of farmers, farm families, agricultural workers, and rural communities across Canada.
The retreat also marked an important leadership transition. We extend our sincere thanks to outgoing Chair Sartaj Sarkaria for her dedicated leadership and welcome Emma Cross as the Foundation's new Board Chair. Emma, a Hereford cattle rancher from Tofield, Alberta, brings firsthand agricultural experience and strong leadership that will help guide the Foundation into its next chapter.
We were also grateful to recognize and thank founding board members Lesley Kelly and Himanshu Singh for their years of vision, leadership, and commitment to building the Foundation from the ground up.
At the same time, we were excited to welcome three new directors:
๐พ John Kowalchuk, Central Alberta grain farmer and rural community advocate
๐ Richard Horne, Executive Director of Beef Farmers of Ontario
๐ Jessica Stiles, Ontario-based psychotherapist with expertise in both agriculture and mental health
Together, their diverse perspectives and experience will help strengthen our work and our impact.
A highlight of the retreat was a strategic visioning session facilitated by Patti Durand of BrightTrack Consulting, helping us continue shaping the future of the Foundation with purpose and clarity.
We also had the opportunity to visit two incredible local operationsโFarm One Forty and Black Fox Farm & Distilleryโwhere innovation, sustainability, and community are woven into every part of their work.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the retreat such a meaningful few days. We left Saskatoon energized, aligned, and excited for what's ahead.
