SO HAPPY for #merrillmade alums and former Howard fellows Kara Newhouse and Vanessa Sánchez (@vanesanchez_g), who each won 2026 Institute for Nonprofit News Insight Awards for Explanatory Reporting — while working for different newsrooms!
Newhouse, our Howard Center's deputy data editor, won with Suncoast Searchlight and Sánchez won with El Tímpano.
Suncoast won for an investigative series on how an increasing number of privately run special districts wield government-level power and fuel a higher cost of living for many Floridians.
Sánchez led a reporting team for El Tímpano that followed cuts to healthcare access that impacted immigrant communities. Great work!
