A CHILD dies in a school and the Kenyan police will rush there and arrest the school owner, the admin, the deputy, the class teacher and the messenger. The reason they do that is not to conduct any tangible investigations, its purely to extort bribes. Don't be fooled.
I am a practicing lawyer and I can swear that I have never handled ANY criminal case where the complainant and the suspect/accused was never asked to give a big bribe either for the case to go away or to be softened. And it gets even worse.
The reason why DCI will arrest as many people as possible is to widen the possible source of the bribe,.the catchment area. Our Police stations are now market places for trading justice literally.
LET me give you a real unbelievable example. A friend of mine reported a case at Kasarani DCI in August last year. It was a case of theft by his business partner, from their own company. He was asked to give 100k for the complaint to be worked on. He couldn't.
One day same August, the DCI boss called him so they could go and arrest the culprit. He went to the station and was locked up instead. He was handed over to Shauri Moyo Police Station where he found that the said culprit (his business partner) had just made an exact same complaint against him.
Next day he was taken to Makadara court, charged with a very serious fraud offence. Unfortunately he couldn't reach me. He was given a cash bail of Ksh2 million which he couldn't raise.
Since August last year he has been at Industrial Area remand. Two weeks ago the case came up for hearing and after his accuser had testified, the magistrate realised there was severe miscarriage of justice. The evidence was not adding up. Something was amiss. The magistrate reduced the cash bail from 2million to 50k. (Yes from two million to 50,000).
Infact the magistrate said,"from the way this case is going I order that the accused be released on a cash bail of 50 thousand shillings"
That's how my friend left the remand.
That is just one case of what the police are doing to their fellow citizens in Kenya today.

@KeNHAKenya I'm just wondering why you're insisting on recarpeting thika rd & doing such a shoddy job. Leaving lanes unmarked, loose chippings, no roadworks signage etc. Do you feed off the lives of Kenyans dying in accidents? So shameless! via @pitahlx#KenyanTraffic
