📜 The young Yaqub Ali’s encounter with the Nur-i-Afshan’s editor in 1889, before joining Ahmadiyyat
Recently, the Ahmadiyya Archive & Research Centre came across an old postcard – dated 29 January 1894 – from Rev Hassan Ali Safir, Editor of Nur-i-Afshan. This Ludhiana-based Christian newspaper had left no stone unturned in opposing Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (as).
It was interesting to learn that the young Yaqub Ali, during his school days, had an encounter with Rev Hassan Ali Safir – then Assistant Editor of Nur-i-Afshan.
The young Yaqub Ali had seen Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya in 1887 through Maulvi Ghulam Mohiyuddin Sahib – his teacher at the Vernacular Middle School – and even met Hazrat Ahmad (as) in 1889. However, he had not done the bai‘at until February 1892.
“There was an editor of Nur-i-Afshan, namely Hassan Ali Safir. He was around 60 years of age and a very well-versed poet and writer. Once an article was published about him in Manshur-i-Muhammadi. I took that issue to him and asked, ‘Are you the same Safir Sahib who has been mentioned here or someone else?’”
“He felt a bit embarrassed and said, ‘Sahibzada! You seem to be fond of reading newspapers. I receive many newspapers here, so you may take them [to read].’ In this way, I built some frankness with him and hence, I submitted to him a question to be published [in Nur-i-Afshan].”
The question was:
“Will those who believe in Tawhid [Oneness of God] attain salvation or not? If the answer is ‘yes’, there is no need to believe in the Trinity; if the answer is ‘no’, then what will be the status of the previous prophets prior to Masih (Jesus) and their salvation?”
“This question got published which initiated a debate in the newspaper.”
“At last, Reverend [EP] Newton [Superintendent of Nur-i-Afshan] compelled Munshi Hassan Ali Safir to halt the series [of correspondence].”
The Christian missionaries and their leading newspaper Nur-i-Afshan hesitated in answering the question raised by a 14-year-old Muslim student.
The young Yaqub Ali later pledged allegiance to the Promised Messiah (as) in 1892 and after a few years, served as the founding editor of the Jamaat’s first-ever newspaper, Al Hakam.
@mindnomind9 I saw this and read the following.
May Allah send down as much peace and blessings upon him as there are stars in the sky and particles upon the earth!
@adikahar_7@SpreadHaqq You're just like the Jews who rejected Isa AS who claimed the second coming of Elijah was fulfilled with John the Baptist. Anyway you're ignoring my point, how can a prophet come when Muhammed SAW said there is NO PROPHET AFTER ME?
@adikahar_7@SpreadHaqq Isa AS has passed away and cannot do any of these things. Especially considering that on the day of judgment Isa AS will say to Allah as long as I lived I told them to worship you alone but when you caused me to die i am unaware of the shirk" he can't come down and see this shirk
@adikahar_7@_MdFaheem@SpreadHaqq No that's your understanding and interpretation. You are the one who has added no new prophet. The hadith is no prophet after me (none at all). You either accept our understanding that this means no new law bearing prophet - Prophet that brings a new religion.
@adikahar_7@_MdFaheem@SpreadHaqq This rejects your understanding, you say Isa AS will descend as a ummati prophet. You either have to accept our understanding or have contradictions
@adikahar_7@_MdFaheem@SpreadHaqq So this is your taweel of adding no new prophet. The Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW said no prophet after me. As Ahmadis we believe nor a new or old prophet can come as Muhammed SAW is final and last in every sense
@adikahar_7@_MdFaheem@SpreadHaqq Same question can be put to you for Isa AS? For us there is no contradiction as The Holy Prophet Muhammad SAW says "I am the last of the Apostles and my mosque is the last of the mosques.
[Sahih Muslim 1394c]"
Very clear what is meant here
@adikahar_7@_MdFaheem@SpreadHaqq So you don't believe Isa AS will come back as an ummati? If you try to cope by saying his prophethood will not remain then you will have to reject Sahih Muslim as in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 2937a) Muhammad SAW says nabi for Isa AS second coming.
@_MdFaheem@SpreadHaqq I don't think murrabis differ from the understanding of what Messiah Maud or what Musleh Maud had. If they did then they should be corrected. It's easy to understand our position on buruz and Zilli nabi by reading a misconception removed
