Money is NOT the root of all kinds of evil. That is not what the Bible says.

What does it say? Paul writes, “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils” (1 Tim. 6:10). Not money but avarice, the love of money (φιλαργυρία in Greek), is a root of all kinds of evil. Why? Because it signals that wealth has become idolatrous, that is, something we fear, love, or trust in more than God.

Paul goes on to say, “As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life” (6:17-19).

In other words, Paul does not tell the affluent to empty their bank accounts and relocate to a homeless shelter. Rather, they are to use the wealth that God has given them to engage in acts of generosity that benefit others.

That is what Lydia did for Paul and his mission work. We meet her in Acts 16, one of the chapters we read today in Bible in One Year. She was “a seller of purple goods,” a luxury commodity. She also had a home large enough not only to accommodate Paul and his fellow missionaries in Philippi, but also (probably) to serve as the house church of that city (16:14-15, 40).

Paul will later thank the church in Philippi for their support (Philippians 4). It all began with a wealthy woman, Lydia, and continued with her as well, along with other members of that congregation.

Thank God, therefore, for believers like Lydia who are “rich in this present age,” as Paul says, and who are also “rich in good works,” with which they serve the body of Christ in its Gospel mission and ministry.
