@ArmoredNorman Okay I've realized that by "entering the public consciousness" you actually mean "the top 1-2 selling series of that year". I guess that is a position, but not one that makes a whole lot of sense to me. They aren't equivalent and discussing the later is frankly uninteresting.

@ArmoredNorman and perhaps more importantly, you are completely overlooking the fact that it is well known that "moe" came into ubiquitous pop culture usage after people heard it in the Densha Otoko TV series (2005) which was also before the Haruhi anime adaptation.

@ArmoredNorman Your willful ignorance on this is getting a bit grating. Apparently you don't considering the various aspects of the Akiba economy to count. Try looking at the domestic anime DVD sales from any year in the 2000's and look at some of the series making waves there.

@Digibrah It looks like you dropped Chihayafuru long ago, but since you loved Sangatsu no Lion so much I really recommend giving it another shot. After the first 15 ep or so Chihayafuru really gives off a similar albeit more lighthearted vibe.
