May 3, 2024, Florida.

In a distressing incident, deputies from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office mistakenly entered the wrong apartment while responding to a disturbance call and fatally shot Senior Airman Roger Fortson, a black U.S. Air Force airman based at the Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field.

At the time of the shooting, 23-year-old Fortson was alone, engaging in a FaceTime call within his Fort Walton Beach apartment. The attorney for the airman's family, civil rights lawyer Ben Crump, stated that Fortson went to answer a loud knock at his door, didn't receive a response, and subsequently armed himself with a legally owned gun for protection.

When he walked through his living room, deputies burst through the door, and upon seeing him armed, shot him six times. The woman on the FaceTime call reported hearing Fortson express that he couldn't breathe following the shooting, and he later died at the hospital.

The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Ben Crump and the family are demanding transparency and the release of body cam footage to understand the events that led to this tragic error.
