Shams Tabrizi turns the entire question inside out.

His answer to the question is not a statement about God. It is a statement about you. The distance you perceive between yourself and the divine is not a feature of the cosmos. It is a feature of your own consciousness.

God does not recede. You do. God does not hide. You build walls and call them protection. God is not absent from the present moment. You are absent from the present moment.

This is the central teaching of the Sufi tradition. The divine is not something you reach at the end of a long path. It is what you find when you stop running from the present moment long enough to notice what has always been here.

The distance between you and God is made entirely of the distance between you and yourself.
