Narrator:
“Whatever exists at Hogwarts without my knowledge exists without my permission.”
Consider the implications of this statement, dear reader.
Albus Dumbledore is not merely the Headmaster.
He is the authority by which authority is measured. The beginning and end of every rule, the judge of every transgression, and the sole interpreter of what constitutes justice within these ancient walls.
The Ministry may govern Britain.
The Wizengamot may govern the law.
The Board of Governors may govern Hogwarts.
But who governs the man who governs Hogwarts?
Nobody.
For he is Albus Dumbledore.
And he shall be Headmaster forever.
A student discovers a forbidden corridor.
Dumbledore knows.
A teacher questions his methods.
Dumbledore knows.
A house-elf weeps in the darkness, wondering why his suffering has become a source of Gryffindor's prosperity.
Dumbledore knows.
And yet nothing changes.
For knowledge, in the hands of a righteous man, might inspire compassion. But in the hands of an unquestionable authority, it becomes something far more terrible.
It becomes permission to do nothing.
Dobby approaches him one final time.
“Headmaster, does Hogwarts belong to you?”
Dumbledore smiles.
“No, Dobby. Hogwarts belongs to its students, its teachers, and all those who call it home.”
Dobby's enormous eyes brighten.
“Then why does nobody stop you?”
The smile remains.
For a moment, the Headmaster says nothing.
Then he answers:
“Because, Dobby, they have all mistaken the continuation of my rule for proof that I deserve to rule.”
He returns to his desk.
“Ten points to Gryffindor.”
And the hourglass fills.
Outside, the bells of Hogwarts ring. Students hurry to their lessons. Owls carry letters across the sky. The portraits whisper among themselves.
Everything continues as it always has.
And Albus Dumbledore sits beneath the watchful eyes of a thousand painted ancestors, secure in the knowledge that no one alive remembers a Hogwarts without him.
Perhaps there never was such a Hogwarts.
Perhaps there never will be.
For the Headmaster has outlasted generations of students, generations of teachers, and generations of opposition.
The castle has changed its occupants.
It has changed its rules.
It has changed its history.
But never its master.
Whatever exists at Hogwarts without Dumbledore's knowledge exists without Dumbledore's permission.
And whatever exists without his permission shall eventually learn to disappear.
For he is the Headmaster.
He has always been the Headmaster.
And, unless someone dares to imagine a world beyond his authority...
He will be the Headmaster forever.
