Today, I'll start the PhD Presentation session @RaAMconf 17.30 (15.30 UK time), talking about the use of #metaphor in health & fitness #advertising across different spaces (apps/discourse/commercials) pre- & during COVID-19. #raam14vilniusvirtual Abstract: https://t.co/X0GxowdhlM
Thank you to everyone who came to my workshop at the Birmingham-Budapest Seminar! It was great to hear that you enjoyed analysing @evianwater ads using FILMIP (@lorenabmir) and C-MIPVA (Pan & @DennisTay5) that identify #metaphor in film, and #creativemetaphor in video ads.
Today I will be leading a hands-on workshop on identifying #metaphor in #multimodal commercials at the Birmingham-Budapest Doctoral Seminar, 13.45-15.15 BST, organised by @JeannetteL16
and Rita Brdar-Szabó. Looking forward to plenaries @DennisTay5, @asifa_majid, and PhD talks.
In the Figurative Language Across Cultures series, @paulapsobrino talks about a series of studies detailed in our book 'Unpacking Creativity' (in press) that investigated the use of figurative devices (as spices) in advertising (combined creatively to make a delicious curry).
The secret to good curry is finding the right combination of spices. Advertising is just the same with figurative language. Today I'll talk about metaphor and more and will present our latest work with dream team @JeannetteL16@samanthaford473 ⏰6pm👉link: https://t.co/RotXVPtjV4
Join this talk to hear dr Reijnierse @GReijnierse@Radboud_Uni introducing a source-domain coding method in #metaphor analysis, with examples from Corpora of Historical #AmericanEnglish and Contemporary American English. Registration https://t.co/U9dWH7FmkH @AcademicChatter
Our website with the schedule and registration links for the Birmingham Lectures: Language Structure & Language Use with @LanguageMIT @adelegoldberg1 @davidadger @dagmardivjak@haspelmath is now live!

#raam14vilnius Have you ever wondered about the role of metaphor in creativity? Prof. Jeannette Littlemore has been currently focussing on creative metaphor in films 🎬 workplace experiences 🧰 and advertising 🎆. More on that in our new Facebook video release!
The EMMA project was born in 2015, exploring multimodal metaphor and metonymy in many creative contexts of advertising and product sectors. Check out more here: https://t.co/KAZms36COV #MyTwitterAnniversary
Great to see that our research has inspired aspiring students to develop and explore applying metaphorical puns using their own city's local landmarks for class projects.
Colleagues from Lancaster and elsewhere sending me interesting examples of Covid metaphors, in case I haven't seen them, is one of my regular reminders that academia is not all competition.
And the #ReframeCovid collection is still open to add to & use: https://t.co/0VZsOa6V6n
How do we process metaphors like 'lawyers are sharks'?🦈
On the one hand, metaphors are abstract, so it makes sense that we process them as abstractions (lots of data supports this).
On the other hand, metaphors are often said to involve embodied simulation processes.
Today I learnt the craziest story after my talk with @samanthaford473 at #FTL5 - @VivianMad1 asked if our O2 advert was related to the 1992 incident where over 29,000 Friendly Floatees were washed into the Pacific Ocean. They’ve been travelling worldwide ever since!! #mobyduck
Yes, fascinating talks in the panel today at #FTL52020, with many important and thought-provoking ideas proposed and discussed. I look forward to seeing progress made come the next FTL6 conference!
Fascinating results and so important for improving methodological approaches to metonymy (and metaphor, of course). @paulapsobrino & @samanthaford473, please share when the research is published!
