That being said, the government *can* force your employer to withhold at a certain rate, if you go long enough with clearly improper setup (e.g. filling out for 0 withholding when you have tax liability)

@darthroach_@blessedtism@hellspatisserie No, they don't. You completed Form W-4 and a state equivalent, which dictates to HR/Payroll how much to deduct. They literally cannot decide, you must sign the form.
The only exception is when you file for no withholding and the IRS mails out a form to HR forcing withholding.
