The most useful thing in my backtest wasn't the strategy. It was one extra tag I collected
"Would I actually take this live?"
Currently backtesting a new strategy, wanted to get a 3 month sample size to test the theory out before diving in. Found something interesting:
34 trades on CL from June 1st to Sept 3rd '26
Unfiltered: 29% win rate, +0.21R avg, nothing special
Filtered by the 'would I take this live?' tag:
Yes, 16 trades: 50% WR, +1.15R avg
No, 18 trades: 11% WR, -0.62R avg
Same setup. Same rules. The only difference was whether I'd have pulled the trigger
Now the honest part. About 1/3 of the tags I made after already seeing how the day went. So some of this is hindsight bias and it skews the result
BUT it doesn't kill the idea. It means I need to tag it BEFORE continuing the replay
Important backtesting lesson:
The data doesn't lie but the way you collect it absolutely can. If you're marking anything after you know the outcome, you're not testing, you're just describing your winners
This encourages me to gather an extra 3 months of data and this time be more strict beforehand on the 'would I take live' tag
Tracking all of this in @Metrinote
Journaling isn't punishment
If your review sessions feel like you're getting yelled at, you'll stop within a month. The point is finding the pattern, not beating yourself up. Be kind to yourself
@Metrinote
Your backtest has no fear in it
No hesitation, no revenge, no sizing up to get it back, no skipping the setup. That's why the stats barely match up when you attempt to run the strategy on a live account
MetriNote asks the only question that matters: would you take this live?
A @Metrinote user suggested that the analytics performance by hour section become more granular, and I agree. Switched it from performance by hour to 15 minute buckets. This way it's much easier to identify which time windows you trade the best in. Shout out @Playmakerxciii

Some reality checks…
@Metrinote helping me to see where I am. I love to journal in the weekends.
Come in with a clear mind, no stress over the mistakes of the morning, just a more rested and forgiving me.
I can start again tomorrow with confidence! 🙏🏻
