While most scientific research has focused on men, when it comes to parenthood, the focus has largely been on mothers. But new research shows that fathers undergo profound changes as well — in their hormones, behavior and even their brains.

In Darby Saxbe’s new book, “Dad Brain: The New Science of Fatherhood and How It Shapes Men's Lives,” she shares that new dads also experience a form of postpartum depression at “about twice the rate of the general population.”

“If you think about all of the factors that have been identified as causes of depression, you've got a perfect storm in early parenthood,” Saxbe, who is a clinical psychologist and University of Southern California professor, told host William Brangham.
