New Orleans is using artificial intelligence chatbots in its emergency (911) call centers to address a severe staffing shortage.

According to authorities, the AI ​​handles only non-emergency calls. However, security experts warn of the difficulties algorithms face in understanding local accents and detecting panic, even when it is masked in the caller's voice.

Adding software layers to emergency systems creates dangerous delays at a time when every second counts. An algorithm is incapable of empathy or human judgment when faced with a real crisis situation.

Cities should invest in recruiting and properly compensating qualified human operators rather than testing software on emergency lines.
