Having data to show that there is a geographical bias in where they are washing up indicates that they may not necessarily be dying in that location. But I don't know how we'd determine WHERE they die or become severely injured out at sea.

@iAmJessG The Department of Conservation NZ has a webpage about Marine Mammal Strandings and a hotline people can call to report a whale or dolphin stranding. There’s even information about how you can help and even do a Marine Mammal Medic Course run by Project Jonah!

5/6 #SpsMon1 #DICECON20 The greater the distance from the shore to the 1st bathymetry line, the shallower the angle of the seabed, increasing likelihood of deposition. The seabed at the beach-cast 🐬 locations was significantly more gently sloped compared to 🇳🇿 as a whole

Some good news! In what was an incredible three day rescue mission, 10 long-finned pilot whales have been successfully refloated after becoming tangled in seaweed. The whales are now back swimming freely in their ocean home 💙 @euronewsliving @ecomaeve
