Now at full capacity, the hydroelectric turbines at the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex are increasing flow through the dam by nearly one-third, moving an additional 2,000 cubic feet per second.

Severe weather-related impacts from rising water levels, flooding, straight-line winds, and tornadoes have led Governor Gretchen Whitmer to expand the state of emergency to 32 additional counties. The declaration authorizes the use of all available state resources to assist local response and recovery operations.

🚦⚠️The US-23 bascule bridge in Cheboygan will be raised and closed Monday due to increased water levels on the Cheboygan River. Traffic will be detoured south to the Lincoln Avenue Bridge, which is upstream from the dam complex. There is no timeline when the bridge will reopen.

A large chunk of ice snapped the safety cable at the Cheboygan Lock and Dam Complex Thursday. As a result, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources closed access points upstream and downstream of the dam. 🛑The public is strongly urged to stay off the waterway near the dam and surrounding areas.

🚨SEOC ACTIVATION🚨Governor Gretchen Whitmer activated the State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) at 10 a.m. today to monitor rising water levels and ongoing flooding concerns with the Cheboygan Lock and Dam. Over the past 24 hours, the river has risen to 18 inches below the top of the Cheboygan Dam. If water levels reach 12 inches below the crest of the dam, the response will expand to include additional public safety measures.

Due to forecasted heavy snow and freezing rain creating hazardous travel conditions, all nonessential State of Michigan facilities located in the Upper Peninsula and the following counties: Alpena, Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Crawford, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Montmorency, Otsego, and Presque Isle will be closed effective immediately (March 15) through 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 17.
