Muskegon and WHV, part of the same system: "In 2019, the MDOC took the extraordinary step of treating all 2,000 inmates at WHV CF for scabies after an outbreak there went undiagnosed for more than a year. A federal lawsuit over the MDOC's handling of that outbreak continues."
Duggan said Detroit’s latest demo dirt mess would cost less than $8M to clean up and that his admin had a "100%" success rate getting contractors to pick up such tabs. Neither claim held up. My latest, on the mess now poised to cost city taxpayers $27M:

"…that certain molds were dangerous enough to implicate the 8th Amendment it is not clearly established that prison officials need to take any particular action to remediate the presence of mold." https://t.co/Xa84nGPmUG
AG Nessel: "There are no cases establishing a prisoner’s right to be free from these molds…it is not clearly established that any type of mold at WHV is sufficiently dangerous to incarcerated people, and even if it were clearly established…"
"We have watched these tensions [between MDOC and the guard union] with interest, eyebrows raised and popcorn in hand, because cracks in this carceral coalition have the potential to create opportunities for abolitionists." https://t.co/v1KflQJdGA
Super interesting to see how the MDOC administration is trying to split the CO union by proposing significant salary increases for new staff at U.P. prisons with staff shortages https://t.co/qgCHwqQGMt

MDOC creates the conditions for outbreaks like this by failing to provide effective laundry/cleaning, then punishing prisoners who report medical conditions like scabies by sending them to seg/solidarity, instead of providing treatment. The result? Major oubreaks, mass suffering.
WHV has gotten lots of attention in recent weeks because of how its toxic conditions are killing people imprisoned there. But all of Michigan's prisons have similar problems, e.g. Muskegon C.F. currently has a major scabies outbreak, caused by neglect and repression @MCmuckraker
So the up north facilities that most separate people from their families are also the hardest to staff, and now most expensive to hire for. What part of this is a good idea? https://t.co/8CkMC5NATC
"We're not their slaves." Women imprisoned in MDOC's toxic mold-infested Women's Huron Valley prison, where two prisoners have died in the last two weeks, are forced to work overnight "intensely cleaning" the prison before high-level inspections https://t.co/q7bwtFmQBm

with WHV in the news recently, it's worthwhile to think about how this prison has also been used to rehash/launder some pretty despicable transphobia as well.
In the years MAPS has followed Paul Egan's reporting on the MDOC, we've never seen an article as irresponsible and misguided as this one. This is a bummer, bc his work is usually good... Let's break it down.

Women's Huron Valley Correctional Center is off of lockdown...
But this is only a small reprieve.
WHV still has mold, still has nasty water, and still the MDOC spokesperson is blaming the people being held there for the conditions of the facility.

More than 200 people have died in NY prisons since a mob of white prison guards viciously beat and stomped Robert Brooks to death. Gov. Hochul and the Legislature have accomplished nothing to free people from these death traps.
if you think the state-sanctioned murder of becky fackler is disconnected from the hunger strike at delaney hall in new jersey, think again

A shout out to staff from Warden Jeremy Howard and all of WHV administrative staff!
Warden Howard stated, "Staff at WHV have been amazing though the COVID-19 pandemic and this is my way of saying Thank-you".
We agree Sir. Thank you WHV all MDOC staff for the amazing work you do!
