Disease, injury, lethal infection, gun injuries happen to kids and families of all political persuasions. Our votes have a direct impact on our kids and our grandkids safety as well as families' ability to give them the best care. Vote accordingly.
As a parent, pediatric intensive care doc and ex-hospital CEO, I see the impact of our healthcare policy firsthand. Rep @SpeakerJohnson's and @DonaldTrump's intent to repeal ACA/Obamacare is frightening as are their other policy positions. Here's why.
Even more, let's not forget gun policy with guns deaths being the number one cause of death for kids/people 0-24 in the US. Few things are more heartbreaking than caring for a child fatally injured by guns - whether by accident or crime.
Excited to see this publication on the feasibility of functional precision medicine in treating pediatric cancers. It's been terrific being on the Board and seeing the progress of First Ascent Biomedical. https://t.co/9woTmyduTO
Terrific to be with @EBuller, @MichaelApkon and @GeorginahBlack at today's @CdnClubTO panel on the Canadian health care model. Enjoyed our robust discussion on best practices, primary care models, workforce shortages and the impact of AI. Thank you for having me!
I am a fan of the universal access and single payer aspects of Canadian Healthcare. Picard has a point. The system provides too little incentive to optimize efficiency or manage costs of care. Without, funding constraints turn into rationing which turns into waits.
"the real problem in Canada is that the health system isn’t a system, but rather a series of unconnected services that often work at cross purposes, and with an almost total lack of oversight and planning." https://t.co/KGefWyJIyS by @picardonhealth
The private-public rhetorical merry-go-round is a distraction from health care’s real problems, like lack of planning and vision, by @picardonhealth via @GlobeDebate #cdnpoli#cdnhealth https://t.co/oOmK7VvU6g
All good questions. Surprised that "how do we build systems so that inpatient care is less necessary?" didn't make the list. We should be making hospital care better but also less necessary.
@CanadaPirn is excited to share its @JAMANetworkOpen research on the Top 10 highest-priority, unanswered research questions in paediatric hospital care among young people, parents/caregivers, and healthcare professionals. https://t.co/Z11xbUQc9R 1/12
@ProfEmilyOster Very sorry for your loss. May her memory be a blessing. Professor Oster was one of the most inspirational and impactful professors I’ve ever had the pleasure of studying with.
This new video from @AMarch4OurLives shows what it’s like to be a student today.
Our children should be experts at division—not surviving school shootings.
It doesn’t have to be this way. Congress must act to make this the last #GenerationLockdown.
Watching @JoeNBC this AM with a sane and passionate discussion about gun violence. Yet, I haven’t yet heard advocacy for other states following NY AG lead in holding manufacturers responsible. Juries will do what politicians won’t.
Why are we not doing this everywhere? Taking the approach with gun manufactures that we took when holding Purdue and others accountable for the opiate epidemic? Ultimately the state-by-state AG suites brought action.
In a major victory, a federal court affirmed my office's right to hold gun manufacturers accountable for the devastation caused by guns.
As we mourn the innocent lives lost in Uvalde, Buffalo, and across the nation, this is a moment of light and hope.
Are politicians more pro-gun than pro-life? Are they more interested in money it takes to stay in power than keeping their most vulnerable constituents safe? How long will they propose "solutions" that are distractions? We all need to be asking them – what will it take to act?
I’m horrified, outraged, and deeply saddened for the families of Uvalde. I’m a pediatrician who has spent my career building systems to keep children safe and healthy. Guns are now the leading cause of death for US children.
Guns may not be the only cause, but they are a necessary ingredient. We must make them less accessible. If we need to do so incrementally, so be it. Let's start with UBCs, age limits, banning weapons of war, large magazines.
