In 1996, a Chilean journalist named Victor Gutierrez published a book called Michael Jackson Was My Lover. In it, he claimed he had personally seen a videotape of Michael Jackson sexually abusing Jordan Chandler — a tape he claimed Michael filmed himself. He went on television. He gave interviews. He fed the story to tabloids around the world.

Michael Jackson sued him for defamation.

During the trial, something came out about Gutierrez that barely made headlines. He had documented ties to NAMBLA — the North American Man/Boy Love Association, an organization that openly advocates for the sexual abuse of children. He had attended their meetings. He had written about their ideology approvingly.

The jury found in Michael's favor. $2.7 million in damages.

Victor Gutierrez fled to Chile and never paid a cent.

He was never extradited. The judgment was never enforced. He moved on with his life.

And the stories he planted — the quotes, the claims, the alleged tape that no one ever produced or verified — kept circulating. They got cited in other articles. They fed other books. They became part of the permanent fog around Michael Jackson's name, the background noise that made every subsequent accusation feel more plausible to the public.

The man who fabricated the original story had documented connections to an organization that existed to normalize child abuse. He lost a defamation lawsuit. He fled the country.
