80 years ago this week, the largest amphibious assault in history began as Allied forces landed at Normandy to liberate the world from the barbarity of Nazism.

One of the individuals there was now 107-year old Arthur Rose: he survived the attack on Pearl Harbor to then serve off Omaha Beach commanding Landing Craft Tanks.

Today, he is heading back to Normandy for the anniversary - and @Delta at @BostonLogan and their amazing team gave him a send off appropriate for an American hero.

Great to see this honor being given. @Delta earned my gratitude and respect today.

In 1965, Winston Churchill’s coffin was brought to Westminster Hall, where for 3 days his coffin rested on a catafalque surrounded by candles.  As a schoolboy I queued for several hours, with hundreds of thousands of others as we paid our respects. It was the  first time I went to Parliament.  

I remember being struck that, regardless of political allegiances, a nation was united in honouring the man who led Britain to victory over the Nazis.

By contrast, yesterday’s disgraceful vandalising of Churchill’s  statue in Parliament Square demonstrates a woeful lack of respect.

It also displays an extraordinary ignorance of how easily our liberties - the right to protest, to vote, to think for ourselves - would have been replaced by Hitler’s dictatorship if Churchill hadn’t succeeded in preserving our freedoms and democracy.

Update: SCN is in contact with local community partners and law enforcement, recognizing that the tragic fire has been deemed an arson. We are appreciative of public safety officials for their rapid response, including the quick apprehension of a suspect, who is currently in custody.

We are grateful to the Jackson Fire Department for their swift response and remain in close contact and coordination with local authorities. A cause has not yet been determined but we will remain in close contact with partners as details become available.
