Texas Repeats: Longhorns Capture Back-to-Back National Championships in WCWS Finals
The 2026 Women's College World Series ended with a familiar celebration in Oklahoma City as the Texas Longhorns once again stood atop college softball, defeating Texas Tech 4-1 in Game 2 of the Championship Series to secure their second consecutive national title. Texas completed a two-game sweep of the Red Raiders after opening the series with a 7-3 victory in Game 1, capping another remarkable postseason run for head coach Mike White and the Longhorns.
The championship match-up was a rematch of the 2025 WCWS Finals, when Texas also defeated Texas Tech to win the national title. This time, however, the Longhorns left little doubt, using dominant pitching, timely hitting, and veteran leadership to finish the job in two games.
Texas Tech struck first in the decisive Game 2 when Lauren Allred delivered an RBI single in the third inning, giving the Red Raiders an early 1-0 advantage. For a few innings it appeared Texas Tech and ace pitcher NiJaree Canady might force a winner-take-all third game. Instead, the Longhorns responded with the championship poise they displayed throughout the postseason.
The turning point came in the fifth inning when Texas loaded the bases and Viviana Martinez delivered a clutch hit that helped drive in two runs, swinging the momentum firmly toward the Longhorns. Texas added insurance in the seventh inning when Kayden Henry launched a leadoff home run, while Leighann Goode added another RBI to extend the lead.
Once Texas grabbed the lead, junior ace Teagan Kavan took over. After throwing a complete-game victory in Game 1, Kavan entered late in Game 2 and struck out five of the six batters she faced over the final two innings. Her dominant performance earned her Most Outstanding Player honors for the second consecutive year, making her one of the defining postseason performers of this era in college softball.
The Longhorns' title run was fueled by stars throughout the lineup. Katie Stewart delivered one of the most memorable post-season stretches in recent memory, hitting home runs in four consecutive elimination games leading up to the championship series. Reese Atwood provided power throughout the WCWS, while Martinez, Henry, and Goode delivered some of the biggest hits on softball's biggest stage.
For Texas Tech, the championship series marked the end of a historic season. The Red Raiders reached the WCWS Finals for the second straight year behind the brilliance of senior pitcher NiJaree Canady and a veteran core that transformed the program into a national contender. Canady closes her collegiate career as one of the most accomplished pitchers in the sport, carrying Texas Tech through the post-season and helping lead the Red Raiders to 61 victories and another appearance on college softball's biggest stage.
The all-Texas rivalry once again produced a memorable WCWS Finals, showcasing elite pitching, clutch performances, and the continued growth of women's college softball.
For Texas, the result cemented its place among the sport's elite with back-to-back national championships. For Texas Tech, the future remains bright despite the heartbreaking finish.

Did you know?
The smallest Division I (D1) schools, based on undergraduate enrollment, often include schools like Presbyterian College, known for having fewer than 1,000 undergraduates, with other small D1s found in conferences like the Patriot League or Atlantic Sun, such as Boston University, American University, or Austin Peay State, though enrollment numbers fluctuate yearly, with the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) category generally housing many of the smaller D1 institutions.
