@CptSemi @ilikeadamsmith Genuine lol there

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@KlnRkj @ilikeadamsmith Yep! I think people from the South still believe this. There’s something like this knocking around in JD’s Scots-Irish schtick

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@OnikaEnded @ilikeadamsmith 1850s, in the run up to war

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@spiccarella There were plenty in his lifetime too

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@daniel_dsj2110 I can understand being put off by the style of “French theory” but Foucault and Barthes are jam packed with ideas and arguments you don’t need to buy the farm to engage

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@daniel_dsj2110 This is A Lover’s Discourse, which is, of course, a banger

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@Kulambq Untergehen means also to have a downfall, to destroy yourself, to fall apart, eg. the Hitler movie, Downfall, Untergang, a state of total collapse.

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@pissnixon @patmart100 Yes! It feels downright literary, they feel like plays. Kind of insane that this was a megahit. I think it worked for an audience really conversant in the Hollywood classics?

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@jonathanbfine I have a good friend who insists it doesn't get good *until* the Albertine novel

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@g_shullenberger I always found the load-bearing presumption that Muslim citizens will vote for a Muslim leader because he's Muslim to be a bit shaky

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@shagbark_hick Utica's Finest Barbershop, also--great guys

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@daveweigel The death penalty is an issue like this too, where executions fall precipitously whenever its opponents aren't making it salient

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@AliceFromQueens Sometimes it's the same people!

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@hecubian_devil I don’t need to go around heeled to get the bulge on a dub like you

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@spiccarella You have arrived

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@spiccarella I grew up in a Beatles household and what I find a bit surprising is how little of the catalog I still listen to but how hard the stuff that hits still hits. And Plastic Ono Band is an all timer for me.

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@spiccarella There's just a rueful sadness to John's best songs that add a powerful dimension of longing and regret while the music delivers harmony and bliss and swing you can still revisit as an adult

[Michael Lipkin @MichaelLip74233]

@spiccarella I kind of think Ticket to Ride and Help! hold up better and are more forward looking than a lot of the more self-consciously experimental stuff
