Over the past few decades, congressional elections have transformed from local races to national campaigns, with candidates raising the vast majority of their money from donors outside their potential constituency.
In 2024, just 17.6% of donations to House races came from inside the district; Senate candidates raised 27.5% from in-state donors. Only 2020 saw lower shares, as candidates rely more on national networks, online platforms and ideological contributors outside their home turf.
“Alan Simpson recognized the critical role that transparency and accountability play in government, particularly when it comes to the financing of elections. His work on behalf of fair elections should be a model for everyone who believes in a representative democracy,” said OS Executive Director Hilary Braseth.
