Considered for VP
On June 19, 1856, Lincoln was considered for vice president at the first Republican National Convention. Dayton was nominated on the first formal vice presidential ballot, defeating former Congressman Abraham Lincoln of Illinois.
OTD in 1857, Lincoln worked his most profitable case while representing Illinois Central Railroad in 1856 who paid him $5,000. McLean County had seized railroad land to sell after refusing to recognize the state’s authority. Lincoln sued the company twice for his fee.
President Hoover rededicated the Lincoln Tomb in front of a massive crowd on June 17, 1931. The occasion was the reopening of the tomb following a complete reconstruction, including a new interior. When the memorial was erected in the 1870s, designers focused on the exterior.

Accepts Nomination
The House Divided Speech was an address given by Lincoln on June 16, 1858, at what was then the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield, after he had accepted the Illinois Republican Party's nomination as that state's US senator.
Thomas & Nancy Wed
On June 12, 1806, Lincoln's parents, Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks marry in Washington County, Kentucky.

On June 8, 1862, President Lincoln examines cases of soldiers imprisoned by courts-martial in the District of Columbia penitentiary. N.Y. Tribune, 9 June 1862.
OTD in1865, Mary Lincoln sent a letter to the monument association, saying that if the tomb is not built at Oak Ridge, she will move the president's remains to the U.S. Capitol crypt. On the 15th, members of the monument association agreed to the Oak Ridge site by a vote of 8-7.
Rival Dies
On June 3, 1861, Illinois senator Stephen Douglas, “the Little Giant,” died at the age of 48 in a Chicago hotel room after an exhausting effort to rally public support for the Union. President Lincoln orders a 30-day mourning period for his political rival.
The Lincoln Memorial is an American memorial built to honor the 16th president of the United States. It was dedicated on May 30, 1922. The architect was Henry Bacon, the sculptor of the main statue was Daniel Chester French, & Jules Guerin did the interior murals
On May 29th, Lincoln helps organize the new Republican Party of Illinois. At the first Republican convention, Lincoln gets 110 votes for the VP nomination but loses the nomination to Lewis Dayton. Lincoln gains national attention. He campaigns in Illinois for John C. Frémont.
Author David Kent was at New York Ave Presbyterian Church for Lincoln Legacy Symposium recently & took note of this stained glass of Lincoln. My first vacation after retiring was to Washington D.C. I too had the same feeling of awe when I saw it. Thank you David for sharing.
Grandson Moved...
On May 27, 1930, Mary Harlan Lincoln, Robert's widow, moves her son Abraham Lincoln II from the tomb to share a plot in Arlington National Cemetery with Robert, who died in 1926. However, Robert wished to be buried in the Lincoln tomb.

Post Funeral
May 11, 1865, the 15-member National Lincoln Monument Association is formed to build a permanent memorial. Springfield officials had hoped to locate Lincoln’s burial place near downtown Springfield, but Mary Lincoln was adamant that the tomb be at Oak Ridge.
Conspirators...
On May 10, 1865, the Lincoln conspirators, David Herold, George Atzerodt, Lewis Powell, Mary Surratt, Samuel Mudd, Samuel Arnold, Michael O’Laughlen, and Edman Spangler, are arraigned before the military commission.
