In January 1946 the AP reported that “Lonesome” Jack Newsome, the sole resident of Meteor City in Arizona, had married Goldie Moman of Andalusia, Alabama. For years, travelers on US 66 30 miles east of Flagstaff had noticed the sign that read “Meteor City, Population One. But the sign now read “Population 2.” Newsome said there was room on the sign for additional changes and they might even get a bigger one.
Here is another Kodak Ektachrome color slide photo that was taken by Sylvia Witz's dad in about '52 - '53 of the "Zuni Mountain Cafe-Curios & Chevron" service station in Prewitt, New Mexico on old Route 66 east of Gallup looking west by northwest. We can find no other photos or postcards of this business on our or the other sites on the internet or Facebook. You can see the refinery off to the east in the background. We learned through the many excellent comments below that the building is intact.
Her comments on the post are interesting, "Dad's Kodak Ektachrome slides circa 1952 The Zuni Mountain Range is located mainly in Cibola County of northwestern New Mexico, near Gallup. I suspect this place is long gone and there are probably even nicer places to eat and get gas, today....however...let me tell you....this was a welcome sight in 1952 when there was nothing else around. I see Dad's 1952 DeSoto Suburban pulling a small flat trailer. We didn't have the Pleasure Craft yet. "All right kids! I want everybody out and go to the bathroom and wash your hands because it will be a long time before we stop again!" That was like a recording in our car on all our trips! I do not see the Pep Boys waterbag...Do you think that sign up on the left of the building says Saddle Blankets?"
