Celebrating 40th year with Mark. My super power is raising two respectful, amazing, & successful sons, Zac (firefighter/EMT) & Nic (collegiate scholar/athlete)
Well, Day 5 as a Cemetery Caretaker hit me in the feels (in a good, yet sad way)
I was in one of the further back sections, cleaning up leaves, pine needles/cones and wiping off name plates when a little 83 year old woman packs on the roadway, gets out and walks down to one of the graves I had cleaned about 20 minutes before.
She looked at the grave, looked over at me in and than back at the grave, she seemed very emotional about something.
My first thought was shit, did i scratch the name plate or did i miss something on my debris clean up?
So, i walked over to her and asked her if everything was alright?
She had tears in her eyes and said "it has been 7 years since someone had cleaned her husbands grave."
I was in shock, that is WAY to long for something like that to happen. I get the grave site is in the further back section and not "near" the road for aesthetics but still.
I told her i just started this week and i am doing my best to make sure everyone gets caught up on so that kind of thing doesn't happen again.
She then tells me today was there anniversary and that this was a sign that everything was going to be alright.
She asked if she could give me a hug and i of course told her yes. And let me tell you I hug that little old lady like she was my own family.
That was a hell of a way to end the first week. But damn if i didn't feel like i did something great today, even if it was just something so small as doing my job well.
@CityofTLH Do the right thing. The younger newer firefighters don't bring home enough to survive, while the higher positions do quite well. At least do right by the lower fire positions. They work 48-72 hours per week. Fix it COT.
@JeremyMatlowTLH ...and in the same week we remembered the heroes of 9/11!! Shameful Mayor Daley. I'm so disappointed. I have faith in you to put aside your personal vendetta with TFD and do the job you placed your hand on the bible and promised to serve as our City's leader.
@JeremyMatlowTLH I don't always agree with Comm Matlow, but this observation is spot on. Complete disrespect by the Mayor for leaving while members & families of the organization he represents eloquently shared how the City's unfairness to them affects all these families. Disgusting.
Sorry my Lady Noles had to settle for 2nd place, but it's an honor to lose to a team who puts Christ first. Well played Oklahoma!! Congratulations on the win and thank you for your leadership off the field.
@wccdothan@govbaseball Brotherhood trumps any state title! Brotherhood is forever. This is a very special group and I'm sure Coach Ryan will always remember his first team at Wallace.
