The occupation is killing our people in the South & the Bekaa as they please— farmers, shop owners, children, mothers, fathers, Shia, Christian, Sunni, you name it. This is ethnic cleansing. Your privilege to opt out of critical analysis does not mean it’s not ethnic cleansing.
“Ethnic cleansing” is not an expression that should be chucked around. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but smart people - and I would have imagined William Dalrymple was smart - would know the difference between their opinions and incredibly complex, difficult definitions
The same has been said and done with several genocides . And then, maybe 30 years down the line, when the UN have done all possible useless deliberations, and when our people have been slaughtered, will people like Adam look back and say “hm, maybe it was. Let’s write an op-ed.”
I can’t see you how you can possibly avoid using the term ethnic cleansing, without losing your last remaining shreds of integrity as a journalist, Adam.
Lebanon's internal displacement rate is now 22.6 percent — more than one in five of its people. Over 1.2 million people, including 350,000 children, have been forced from their homes, with the IDF launching more than 1,840 attacks on Lebanon since March 2, killing more than 1,497 people and injuring more than 4,639.
Moreover, the language used by Israel Katz to describe his aims in Southern Lebanon is extraordinarily explicit and self-incriminating. He has confirmed that Israel's military would establish a permanent "security zone" inside Lebanon up to the Litani River, that hundreds of thousands of displaced residents would be "completely prevented" from returning, and that "all the houses in the villages adjacent to the border in Lebanon will be demolished in accordance with the Rafah and Beit Hanoun model in Gaza."
The targeting of civilians for displacement specifically identified by their religion (Shia), combined with the destruction of their homes to prevent return, combined with the explicit statement that they will not be permitted to return — these are precisely the elements that international law identifies as forcible transfer and ethnic cleansing. Human Rights Watch has said that "the displacement of the Shia population looks less like a temporary military necessity and more like a move to permanently displace the civilian population based on their religion."
Its not complex, Adam. You just haven't got the balls to say it straight, and that failure makes your reportage worse than worthless. It makes it morally bankrupt.
This morning in Palestine, Israel took four Palestinian female students hostage during a raid on the town of Birzeit in Ramallah.
The four female are students at the renowned Birzeit University. Three of them were kidnapped from their homes
So much anger and resentment against the world that continues to watch the occupation ravage through our south and Bekaa, massacre after massacre, breaking every possible “ceasefire” clause there is to exist, trying and failing to sever our people’s connection to our land.
This is such an awful crime against civilians and paramedics. One of the many crimes that have become standard operating procedure for the Israeli army when killing Arabs
Just horrific
Lebanon’s Health Ministry releases footage of an Israeli double-tap strike on paramedics today. Ministry says 6 killed including a Syrian child, another half a dozen injured. Death toll since March 2 now stands at 3111, with 9432 wounded #lebanon
Instagram and X statements of denouncement are lame & not even the bare minimum. Rescue workers across Gaza and Lebanon are being personally targeted as they carry out their humanitarian duties. Their murders are not only on the hands of the occupation.
The occupation continues to target paramedics & rescue workers in double tap strikes as they arrive on the scene of a strike to rescue the injured & martyred. Where are the international orgs that preach humanitarian law? The international red cross, whose own are being targeted?
I have come to despise the word ceasefire. How can we act like anything has changed? Only because Beirut has stopped being carpet bombed? In what dictionary does it say that a ceasefire includes the constant killing of our medics, journos, and people? The destruction of homes?
Civil Defense rescuer Hussein Jaber was killed in an enemy airstrike in Kfar Tebnit, Nabatieh.
He joins dozens of other rescuers and humanitarians that have been murdered while on the job.
I’ve just learned of the killing by Israel of one of the most courageous people I knew: rescuer Hussein Jaber from the Lebanese Civil Defence in Nabatieh.
I had known him for three years and met him many times. He was always inspiring, brave and endlessly helpful for many reporters.
We will not forget what Israel has done to Lebanon’s rescuers.
We will not forget Hussein.
It is becoming harder & harder to report on Israel’s war on Lebanon when your timeline starts to feel less like news coverage & more like a daily obituary for your own people.
Children. Women. Fathers. Entire families. Medics. Obliterated villages & towns.
The killings are relentless. You finish writing about one Israeli strike, only for another name, another face, another small coffin to appear minutes later.
At some point, the weight of constantly documenting this grief begins to bury parts of you with it. 🥀
We still have 4 war wounded children in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, at the AmericanUniversityof Beirut MedicalCenter.
They all have lost both parents. Killed by Israel
“Ceasefire” but the occupation is consistently calling for the “evacuation” of towns every other day with the ultimate goal of destroying them.
Ceasefire? Ceasefire.
