Los Angeles Magazine Endorses Vice President Kamala Harris for President

Donald Trump represents an existential threat to everything we love about Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Magazine Editorial Board announces our endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for President of the United States. This was an easy decision. As the co-owner of Los Angeles magazine, I asked our editors if I could write this endorsement. Unlike the Los Angeles Times, I don’t want any ambiguity where we stand. Silence is complicity.

Los Angeles is a melting pot with diverse people and diverse perspectives. Los Angeles is a city of love and not hate. Donald Trump represents an existential threat to everything we love about Los Angeles. He spreads hate and division wherever he goes, as he did recently here during his visit to Pacific Palisades. On the other hand, Vice President Kamala Harris embodies the positivity, professionalism, law and order, and innovation that we love about our city.

Donald Trump begins each of his rallies with a tribute to January 6 insurrectionists with a song called the “January 6 Anthem.” He has replaced our national anthem with this song. Trump replaces the American flag with flags that say Trump on them, which he also sells along with NFT’s and $60 bibles. He talks about rounding up immigrants in a “bloody mass deportation operation” which would instantly turn Los Angeles into a war zone. He says he will bring America “back to 1798” and that he will shut down media and arrest journalists who don’t give him fawning, Kim Jong Un-like coverage. Unless you are a pig endorsing your slaughterhouse owner, how could any self-respecting media organization endorse the man who, according to his own generals, publicly expresses his admiration for Hitler?

Then there is the fact that Donald Trump is a convicted felon. He was found liable of sexual abuse. He is on tape bragging about sexually assaulting women and peeping in on women’s dressing rooms. He stole nuclear secrets and said that he telepathically declassified it. He led an insurrection against our nation. He says he will pull America out of NATO. He openly admires dictators. And no, this isn’t golf. And he doesn’t get a “mulligan” for mismanaging Covid-19 and saying, “like a miracle it would all go away.” Trump was also an economic nightmare, adding $8 trillion to America’s debt. 

Finally, Donald Trump is clearly unhealthy and is presenting what could be serious dementia-like symptoms at his rallies. What this means: a vote for Trump is more likely a vote for JD Vance.

America and Los Angeles are so much better than that.

But while I could go on at length about Donald Trump’s flaws, more ink needs to be spent on what the positive vision is to take America forward.

Vice President Kamala Harris doesn’t get our endorsement simply because she is not Trump. Vice President Kamala Harris has earned our endorsement because she has showed she is the most qualified person in America to lead the pro-democracy coalition of Democrats, classic Republicans, and independents. VP Harris has made her candidacy about protecting the core freedoms of Americans. Freedoms like the rights of women to make their own reproductive health decisions. The rights Donald Trump ripped away by placing three Supreme Court Justices in a calculated effort to overturn Roe v. Wade.

Unlike Donald Trump, Vice President Harris believes that climate change is real. And she has plans to deal with it, while simultaneously continuing to grow the economy.

Also—and this is what is especially important to us: Vice President Harris ensures normalcy and stability and sanity.

Vice President Harris doesn’t deliver speeches revolving around fictional serial killers like Hannibal Lecter. She doesn’t rant loud about the penis size of deceased golfers. She doesn’t dance aimlessly on stage to YMCA’s greatest radio hit for 40 minutes while people in the audience pass out from dire heat exhaustion. She doesn’t strand her supporters in the desert like Trump did recently in Palm Springs. The contrast at the Presidential debate was sharp. One one side: VP Harris presenting cogent policies. The other: Donald Trump blathering racist conspiracy theories about migrants eating cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio.

Donald Trump calls the Americans he doesn’t like the “enemy within” and threatens to use military force against American citizens, including those of us here in Los Angeles

VP Harris promises to be a President for all Americans.

For us, this choice is simple. This choice is about real patriotism. This choice is about our future. The future of America. The future of Los Angeles. We endorse VP Kamala Harris for President of the United States.

Obama: When I was president, I had been talking to scientists for a while so during my last year in office, we put together a pandemic playbook for how to deal with the eventuality of a pandemic.. When Trump came in, we gave over this playbook and he threw it out. I want to be fair on this, no matter who was going to president, this was going to be a problem… But if you look at a country like Canada, their per capita death rate was 40% lower than here. So just do the math. That’s more than 400k people. People’s grandparents, people’s fathers, people’s moms who would’ve been alive if Trump had just paid attention and tried to follow the plan that we gave him.
