Marina Lopez spent nearly seven months in ICE custody after her arrest in Chicago in June.
On Christmas Eve, Lopez, from Guatemala, finally returned home. She was released after the federal government failed to provide a reason or evidence justifying her detention.
In directing her release, the judge wrote that “the government admits it has no record of why (Marina’s) supervision was revoked and makes no effort to explain why she is now detained.”
The mother said her strength to endure more than 200 days in detention came from her local church and her children’s choir group, which rallied around them during that time.
Her story is one of faith, resistance, and community during the Trump era.
