@mattyglesias I think it would be more useful to know what changes to school equity programming actually are! There's a very open empirical question about what's happening outside of the most elite private schools. I read about risible DEI stuff but haven't encountered it at our public school.
@AlecMacGillis I would never compare it to Tuchman, but Mike Duncan's incredibly readable biography of the Marquis de Lafayette covers quite a bit of 4. And even though I read them a long time ago I remember learning a lot from Peter Gay's two books on The Enlightenment.
@HPluckrose@ItsAndyRyan@NewEricHoffer @coldtakehaver @NAChristakis @dadsof3 @jonathanchait@thomaschattwill To be clear, and maybe I wasn't, the finding isn't about firings. (If 400 academics had been fired for their views it would be outrageous!) It was all kinds of "targeting" -- petitions, protests, demands for apologies, etc.
@S___Elliott@SoOppressed Why wouldn't I respond? In the real life incident -- not a tenured professor, obviously -- the students are furious and demand his reinstatement!
@thomaschattwill@jonathanchait Sure. And I don't think it's nothing. I just think it's a generational struggle akin to the one between Dissent era socialists and the new left, not The Terror.
1. Some thoughts on this insightful piece from @michelleinbklyn: https://t.co/IG8PwBSQKL
I think this plays out both individually and collectively, since generations acquire an identity precisely when they're young and new and hip, and the olds are trying understand them.
@lucindaros Adam Gurri gets at this in his essay, but I think the climate of intolerance, which I agree is real, is a function of the Internet more than the left per se
@powellnyt @jswatz But I think they are troubling and illiberal and say so all the time! I'm trying to understand the compulsion to compare them to times of terrible historical repression.
