A question for manga readers outside Japan

I want to better understand the real barriers people face when trying to buy or read Japanese manga outside Japan.

There may be no translation available. Releases may be delayed. Digital editions may be region-locked. Payment methods may not work. Physical books may not be available locally. International shipping may be too expensive. Or people may simply not know where they can legally buy a title.

I imagine the situation is very different depending on the country, region, language, store, and local publishing market.

For some time, I have personally heard these kinds of concerns from international readers on Twitter/X. However, rather than only seeing fragmented opinions, I would like to collect more detailed and specific experiences, think carefully about them, and organize what I learn.

I believe that listening to these experiences may help us think about how to create a slightly better environment for people around the world who want to read Japanese manga.

Living in Japan, it is difficult to see exactly where overseas readers are being stopped, even when they genuinely want to support a work legally.

That is why I want to hear directly from people who actually live in those countries and regions.

In the near future, I am thinking of creating an anonymous Google Form where people can share their experiences, problems, and suggestions.

I may not be able to change anything on my own. Even so, I want to listen carefully to people’s experiences, understand what is happening, and look for better ways forward.

If you live outside Japan and have experienced this, I would be grateful if you could share your thoughts in the replies.
