The campaign to keep Britain under the control of EU law and institutions was founded largely on dire economic forecasts meant to terrify people into voting for the EU.

When the majority of voters presciently ignored those exaggerations and voted for independence, they were attacked; their intelligence and right to vote even brought into question in one of the most embarrassing and snobbish public spasms of my lifetime.

Subsequently, many who had peddled the lies—and many who sadly fell for them—were now unavoidably drawn to (by their confirmation bias) and prone to share any negative economic news about the UK economy; both as a way to vindicate their prior predictions, but also to cement the dominant post-Brexit narrative as a catastrophic and regretful one.

Unfortunately for them, the truth of the matter is that the UK economy has performed much like similar economies. Better than some and worse than others. There was no Brexit cliff-edge, contrary to what so so many “experts” predicted.

This elitist tantrum is now thankfully subsiding in the face of facts presented in context, and while the most dogmatic will continue to see what they need to see, a more reasonable assessment of the costs and benefits of EU membership will now be possible.
