I can't wait for people to find out what happened to the sword that beheaded #AnneBoleyn. The picture below isn't the actual thing, though; the real sword was, unfortunately, in a considerably more 'distressed' state when finally I set eyes upon it. Not long to go now! #Tudors #History #BooksWorthReading
A water pageant was held on the #Thames#OTD in #Tudor times (1536), in honour of #HenryVIII's new queen/third wife, Jane Seymour; I couldn't think of anything particularly droll to add to this, so the picture will have to do! #History#London
Another of those #books that #AnneBoleyn aficionados tend to handle with fumigation tongs, mainly because - shock horror! - it paints its subject in a somewhat less than saintly light #Tudors#History
My one stab - thus far - at writing a children's #book; this one was published ten years ago now, back in 2016 #Tudors#Royals#AuthorCommunity#History https://t.co/UJcZCFYQQ6
#HenryVIII's 'henchman' Thomas Cromwell - then 1st Earl of #Essex - was arrested #OTD in #Tudor times (1540), in large part for failing to help #TheKing secure a separation from his fourth wife - Anne of Cleves - so that he could marry Anne's lady-in-waiting, Catherine Howard; yes folks, by this point a certain sort of deja vu was setting in... #History #Royals
The Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna of #Russia was born #OTD in 1897 (modern dating); she was the second daughter of the country's last rulers, Nicholas & Alexandra, and perished alongside her parents and siblings in the #Revolution in 1918 #History#Royals
The paperback version of my book, Sex and Sexuality in Stuart Britain (2020), is currently on a special offer. Buy direct from @PSHistory https://t.co/s9iAqYxtvh!
Actress Natalie Portman was born #OTD in 1981, in #Jerusalem; she played #AnneBoleyn in the 2008 #movie 'The Other Boleyn Girl', opposite Scarlett Johansson as Mary Boleyn. The movie is based on the #book by Philippa Gregory and includes a plot-line whereby Anne tries to seduce her brother so that she can conceive and save herself from #HenryVIII's wrath; thank heavens the real-life Anne would never stoop to such a thing! #History
#OTD in #Tudor times (1536); #Parliament passed the second 'Act of Succession', which removed #HenryVIIIβs daughters, Mary and Elizabeth, from the succession; the field was now clear for Jane Seymour to produce that prized male heir. Sadly for her - and in one of #history's great ironies - it would in fact be the two sidelined girls who would go on to monarchical glory... #Royals
'The Field of the Cloth of Gold' kicked off #OTD in #Tudor times (1520), as the #English and the #French spent several lavish days trying to be friends; #HenryVIII and Francis I led the way, with Catherine of Aragon and Claude of #France bringing up the rear. Oh, and #AnneBoleyn was probably there too #History - The place - in the Pale of Calais - is now a turnip field, and there's me in the picture, stunned into silence by the anticlimax of the location #Royals
