Rwandan opposition figure Thomas Nahimana has called for the complete disarmament of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), arguing that lasting peace in the Great Lakes region cannot be achieved while Kigali maintains what he describes as a militarized regional posture.

“There will be no real peace in the Great Lakes until the Rwanda Defence Force is disarmed,” Nahimana said.

Nahimana argues that disarming the RDF would reduce cross-border military influence, lower tensions with the Democratic Republic of Congo, and open the door to a political rather than military solution in the region.

Today, the RDF is officially sanctioned by the United States.

The U.S. has blacklisted the Rwanda Defence Force and sanctioned four Rwandan officials under its DRC-related program, freezing assets under U.S. jurisdiction and restricting financial transactions.

As sanctions take effect, pressure is mounting on Kigali amid continued instability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where years of conflict have devastated civilian life.

@onduhungirehe When the Rwandan troupes withdraw from DRC, and Rwandan current regime ceases to loot the Congolese natural resource over innocent blood shed every day, peace will not come. For peace to return in the region, there must first be regime change in Kigali.

The message signals a possible shift in U.S. policy from mediation to enforcement, amid growing frustration over Rwanda’s duplicity and disregard for commitments made under the Trump-led peace framework.

What’s at stake? U.S. credibility, regional stability, and justice for Congolese civilians are still under attack. Pressure is mounting, and Kigali is officially on notice.
