A big week ahead.
This Thursday I will be speaking at an event in Parliament, hosted by MP, Saqib Bhatti and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists. We will be highlighting issues for children who should be able to receive the specific speech therapy they need, and to raise awareness of CAS (Childhood Apraxia of Speech) & Verbal Dyspraxia. Our aim is to request more funding to recruit speech and language therapists to help the children and to also provide help in schools. We will be begging the government to provide more resources and support for families.
We are celebrating our AHPs a day early here @MidYorkshireNHS for National AHP day!! 💜 Thank you to all our AHP colleagues, check out the stall in the atrium, for freebies, info and a chance to win prizes in support of MY MRI appeal. #AHPsDay2023

🧵Try to get the child’s attention first before speaking to them, to ensure they’re listening in the first place. This may vary from saying their name or making a certain sound as a cue, e.g. using a musical instrument to show that you are about to speak. #mySLTday#SLT#therapy
Attention and listening is the foundation of communication and are the building blocks required in order for our expression and understanding to develop. Here’s a thread of our SALT top tips…pay attention! 💡🧵
🧵Use fun activities little and often! Give the child little breaks between motivating activities for them to reset and bring their focus back ready for the next activity. With time, you can gradually increase how long these activities last for.
Did you know The average 18 month old is exposed to 4380 hours of language at a rate of 8 hours a day from birth. A child who uses AAC and receives speech therapy x2 a week for 20-30 minutes will reach the same amount of language exposure (in their AAC language) in 84 years!
🧵That means we should be providing children with AAC continuous exposure and modelling of their device throughout the day. We shouldn't be relying on direct therapy sessions alone! 🗣️💻⌨️ #mySLTday#SLT#AAC#speechtherapy
