I was in a deanery meeting once where the other parish staff were complaining about the one parish in the deanery that didn't charge fees for sacramental prep, weddings (I think you had to pay the cantor/choir but not for the usage of the church) and I wanted to pull my hair out
@jdflynn@Magister_Mondo I fully get this for the fall, but I always wonder why the summer ones don't utilize an otherwise empty (or nearly empty) Catholic college. I can think of a few with enough space (bedrooms, dining space, conference space, & a chapel) that could likely accommodate this.
Why not meet in a monastery or some sacred space instead of these horrific convention center ballrooms? When did Catholic culture become corporate culture?
Merz: "Ukraine has been defending its freedom for more than 4 years."
(AfD members laughing)
Merz: "That’s telling sign, ladies and gentlemen. They laugh about it, they laugh about fate of millions of people in Ukraine and they travel to Moscow for their champagne receptions."
The beauty of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia inspires us to learn ever more from our Master and Lord the art of living according to His Gospel. As we lift our gaze toward Him, the Crucified and Risen One, let us commit ourselves to lift up those who lie in the dust (cf. 1 Sam 2:8). Let us show in this way that the Sagrada Familia is the tallest church in the world, not so as to stand out in worldly rankings, but rather to guide the steps of the people of God, with the Cross illuminating their path, like a lamp burning brightly as we await the return of the Bridegroom. #ApostolicJourney #Spain

It’s been fascinating to watch Europeans run around America while here for the World Cup.
They’re eating Texas barbecue, and touring state parks, like it’s a lifelong dream.
And we take it all for granted.
Americans spend so much time arguing with each other, that we forget how inspiring this country is.
Probably by design.
There has been an over-shift in too many dioceses and parishes that prioritize procedural compliance and managerial function over direct pastoral work. Everything should be subordinate to what is best to foster the salvation of souls.
I think there’s also just a “layperson of a certain age” urge to meddle in Catholic weddings in general. The lady in charge of marriage prep in my former diocese was notorious. She once caused a dramatic scene by showing up at a wedding rehearsal
A few people have posted stories of "petty tyranny" from Catholic staff - here is mine: Once a friend asked me to be godfather to his son in another state. The parish there needed a message from my parish saying I was "qualified". The parish secretary refused to give it to me because you have to take a class, and that class only happens every three months. Thing is, I taught the class! I worked for the diocese, and just got the bishop to write the note...
To visit Barcelona’s soaring Sagrada Família basilica is to visit a parallel universe in which architectural modernism barely happened, symbolism & decoration remained acceptable & we kept creating places with joy, natural patterns & a whiff of the sacred. My latest article in…
