On this day in 1893 at the World's Columbia Exposition. Whitcomb Judson of Chicago patented the "hookless fastening," which we know today as the zipper. The Museum of Science of Industry at the World's Fair was known as the Palace of Fine Arts.
Maybe not the greatest, but one of my favorites: the Guardians of the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge pylon. Cleveland, Ohio, USA.
Built in 1932 in art deco style, they display the confidence and verve of a society even during a disaster like the Great Depression. Societies in decline just don’t express themselves like this.
Any American, large, art deco monuments fall into this category for me.
