🚨 How Does a Footballer Actually Get a Full-Size Trophy Replica in Their House?

Everyone is asking how Salah has a Champions League trophy at home 🤔.

Here's the answer ⤵️🤝

While it is common for football clubs to display a replica of major trophies in their stadium cabinets, the reality for individual players is a different story altogether. So how exactly does a player end up with a "Big Ears" replica in their living room?

To understand this, we first need to look at the regulatory framework governing replica trophies.

Rule 1: The Original Never Leaves UEFA's Hands.

Under UEFA's regulations, the original trophy remains in UEFA's custody and ownership at all times. It's only brought out for the final and then quietly returned to UEFA's vaults once the confetti settles.

What the winning club actually takes home is a full-size replica, engraved with the club's name.

Previously, clubs that won the competition five times overall or three times in a row were permitted to keep the original trophy permanently. This explains why Real Madrid, Ajax, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, and Liverpool each own a version of the original.

But ahead of the 2008–09 season, UEFA abolished that rule entirely. Thus, Barcelona, even though they won their fifth title in 2015, went home with a replica and a sleeve badge (Check the next post for explanation on this)

And this is where it gets interesting.

Even that replica comes with strict conditions (See Article 11 of UEFA regulations):

🔹️The club must keep it within its own control at all times

🔹️It cannot leave the country without UEFA's prior written consent, and

🔹️ It cannot appear in any commercial setting where a sponsor or third party benefits from its presence.

This is precisely why a player cannot simply borrow the club's trophy to display at home.

Rule 2: Players get miniature with the medals.

In recognition of winning the tournament, each player receives a gold medal and a miniature replica of the trophy, normally between 15 and 20 cm tall (Think of it as the Temu version of the UCL)

Kai Havertz, who scored the winning goal in Chelsea's 2021 Champions League final victory, shed light on this during a room tour on the German YouTube channel EHRENPFLAUME, hosted by presenter Kai Pflaume. His trophy room featured a replica of the Champions League trophy from alongside a miniature of the UEFA Super Cup. (I'll drop the Kai Havertz room tour video in the comments)

🔹️If players only get a miniature, how then does Salah have a big one at home?
Firstly, that's not a full-size (1:1) replica because only the organizers can award a full size. But, others—club and players—can make a replica, provided it's marked as a copy and doesn't exceed four-fifths, or 80%, of the original trophy's size.

Thus, that trophy sitting on a shelf, however impressive it looks, is almost certainly smaller than the one lifted on the pitch.

Players who have won the trophy have the opportunity to make the replica of it provided the rules are followed.

For Kai Havertz, the big Champions League trophy was made by his girlfriend (now wife), Sophia as a birthday gift.

In conclusion, only players who have actually won the tournament can commission a replica and even then, it must be clearly marked as a copy and cannot exceed 80% of the original's size.

So the next time you see a footballer posing next to a Champions League trophy at home, know that it is not the full-size original. Also, next time your club goes on a trophy tour, they will have obtained explicit written consent before that replica ever left the country.

‼️ Most actions in football, bothon the pitch and off the pitch, are clearly governed by rules. Many of which most fans never even knew existed.
