@Coolchloroplas3 No matter what organelle, of course if they malfunction they will not be as good and cause disease. Another point, mitochondria provide enough energy in both cells, including animal cells WHICH CHLOROPLASTS AREN’T IN. Lastly, mitochondria do more than just energy, what do you do?
You are forgetting the part where the mitochondria is too damaged to keep the cell alive, as the cell depends on the energy from the mitochondria. Apoptosis also is key in the early development for organisms. As for the diseases, many other organelles also “cause” them.
When the mitochondria malfunctions, it begins to kill the cell in a process called apoptosis, even though the rest of the cell functions perfectly fine, causing many issues, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's @MightyChond2021#voteribosomeorgohome
In the matrix of the mitochondria there are matrix granules that create contact sites where enzymes can function efficiently! #MIGHTYstructure#VoteMIGHTYchondria
Fun fact: Part of the structure of the mitochondria is the cristae. It’s a fold in the inner membrane that gives more surface area for reactions to occur. #MIGHTYcool#VoteMIGHTYchondria2021
I don’t just do cellular respiration, I also signal between cells and am responsible for cell death (apoptosis). Don’t worry, apoptosis is used to eliminate unwanted cells and to eliminate cells damaged beyond repair. #VoteMIGHTYchondria
My origin shows a lot about me. Ancient mitochondria once were free prokaryotic cells until one was engulfed by a cell. Then mitochondria and cells have had a symbiotic relationship ever since. Mitochondria can be both independent and cooperative. #OrganelleElection2021
